Teen accused of rape, strangling of toddler

Here’s an article of interest.  I am sure that this young man will make an insanity defense based on the statements of his attorney.  However, I would love to hear how being insane caused this young man to rape and strangle a baby.  This really makes me mad.  By using such defense strategies, the general population is given the impression that being mentally ill equates with being a criminal.  What do you make of this article?  Do you think I am right or wrong?

LAREDO, Texas — A 17-year-old from Laredo has been indicted on charges that he kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered a toddler last year.

Jose “Lalo” Eduardo Arredondo has been in custody since authorities tracked him down in Mexico last fall, but on Tuesday, he was formally indicted.

In September 2009, 2-year-old Katherine Cardenas was found dead outside her home. Her mother was later sentenced to two years in prison for child abandonment.

Arredondo was 16 at the time the little was killed, and while he’ll be tried as an adult, he won’t face the death penalty.

Arredondo’s attorney, Eduardo Pena, told the Laredo Morning Times that Arredondo has been diagnosed as psychotic and has a history of suicide attempts.
